Apollo's Story

apollo on his small cage

Apollo came to me on a warm Saturday evening. Frightened, and his feathers all looking like fringe, in this undersized cage where he had spent all 15 years of his life. He had a severe bacterial infection in his mouth and bumble foot from standing on the same surface year after year. He was very frightened of men, as all he had ever experience from them was yelling and throwing things at him. With women, he was loving, only wanting to lay his head on your shoulder and be loved. He didn’t have toys because the previous owner said that all he did was chew them up (which is what they are supposed to do). After being with us for several months and a new huge cage and lots of toys and new food experiences everyday, he started becoming the beautiful intelligent bird that I knew he could be. A loving family adopted him and he now has a huge new playground and lots of attention and nutritious foods to eat. A success story!
apollo looking like fringe Unfortunately, not all birds are this lucky. Parrots are the 3rd most popular pet in the United States now and 85% of those birds are rehomed within the first year. An impulse buy, without the information on how to care for these beautiful creatures, usually ends them up in abusive or neglected situations. There are an estimated 60 million birds in households today and many of these birds end up in rescues and sanctuaries, with behavioral problems and illnesses. I am but one of these rescues..I am non profit and in desperate need of funds for vet visits, cages, foods and toys. I also need volunteers. If you can help, it would be greatly appreciated.Thank you
